The Quinte West Image Landscape Peewee Hawks participated in the Mary Parkinson Memorial Early Bird tournament in Richmond Hill last weekend. The boys began with a first-round matchup against Milton. It started with a quiet first period with neither team able to find the back of the net. The teams would share goals in the second with Holden Webster scoring (Mooney, Slone). Webby (Andrews, Coe) would strike again in the third followed by singles by Wease (Fanjoy, Baird), and Andrews (Webster, Mooney). Milton would get one in the third, but they were no match for our squad including Dryden Riley who played solid between the pipes, in a 4-2 final.

Game 2 was a bit more competitive as Richmond Hill matched effort and intensity with the Hawks. Both teams would hit the score sheet in the first period with Webby(Fanjoy, Mooney) notching one, to keep the score even at 1-1. Richmond Hill would score the lone goal in the second but Colby Coe(Lordy) would tie things in the third to complete the tie at 2-2. Carson Down made some desperation saves in the final couple minutes to keep the Hawks in the game.

The 3rd game was an uneven matchup from the start. First period goals from Webby(Davy, Mooney), Mooney(Andrews, Davis), and Weasy(Fanjoy) would get the ball rolling. Three more in the second by Mooney(Davy), Webby(Mooney, Coe), and Sillsy(Pilatzke) would put things out of reach. And two more in the third Fanjoy(Weasy) and Mooney(Webby) would ice it. Riley played another stellar game between the pipes.

A win in the fourth game would secure the Hawks a spot in the semifinals and they did not hesitate in showing Kanata that they had no intentions of being pushed around. The first period was very physical but relatively quiet with few calls and no goals scored. Weasy(Baird, Davis) would open the scoring in the second period and Fanjoy(Davis) would add one of his own. The penalty box had lots of visitors from both teams but the Hawks continued to rack up the goals in the third with 2 from Mooney(Andrews, Coe) and another from Eli Davis(Weasy, Lordy). Down would record the shutout and the Hawks would secure a semi-final match with Nepean with the 5-0 victory.

The semi final was a back and forth affair with an even first period and neither team able to find the back of the net. Davy(Carr) would score twice in the second and Nepean would get one back before the end of the period. The Hawks couldn’t find their mojo in the third and were outskated and outbattled by Nepean who would tie things up before the end of regulation. Overtime would consist of 5 minutes of 3 on 3 hockey. The Hawks managed to control the first 2 minutes with some great scoring chances but ultimately, they didn’t have an answer for Nepean’s tenacity. Overall it was a great tournament with lots of positives to build on for the coming season.

This past weekend the Hawks would enjoy back to back home games. Saturday evening, they would face Ajax in a hugely lopsided matchup. First period goals by Andrews(Mooney, Davy), Pliatzke(Davy, Coe), and Fanjoy(Andrews) would put Ajax on their heels. The onslaught would continue in the second with goals from Coe(Pilatzke), Fanjoy(Davis), Mooney(Andrews), and Weasy(Fanjoy, Davis). The Hawks would add insult to injury in the third as Mooney(Webby) would notch his second of the game, and Fanjoy(Weasy) would get his third. Riley was solid between the pipes and led the Hawks to the 9-1 beatdown.

Sunday would prove to have similar results as the Hawks came out strong but were matched with intensity in the first period by Clarington. Scoring would being in the second with goals by Andrews(Webb) and Davy but Clarington would get one back to keep the score close going into the final

frame. The Hawks would open up a bit in the third scoring 3 unanswered goals from Weasy(Fanjoy), Mooney(Andrews), and Fanjoy(Davy, Davis). Carson Down played solid and the Hawks secured the 5-1 victory.
