Hawks Open Season With Good Showing in Ajax
The World Elite Training Minor Peewee Hawks got prepared for the coming season this past weekend while competing in the Ajax Early Bird tournament. The team played well but came up just short losing a tight battle in the semi final game.

The Hawks opened the tournament on Friday with a game against the host team from Ajax. After a slow start the team found themselves trailing 1-0 heading to the third period. Brendan Reid tied the game with three minutes remaining and then found the back of the net again with 33 seconds to go with the assist coming from Connor Boates. The Hawks would hold on to take the win. Nowl Wallace had a strong game in net.

In game two Quinte West faced the Caledon Hawks and picked up their second win by a score of 4-2. Reid led the offence with 2 goals while singles went to Eli Kenney and Tyson Gregory. Noah Marsh and Boates picked up the assists. Noah Groeneveld was solid and picked up the win in net.

On Saturday morning the Hawks faced the Peterborough Petes in what was a tight checking affair that ended in a 2-2 tie. Reid and Colby Wiersma scored for the Hawks while Cael Hussey had an assist. Wallace tended the net for the home side and played well to keep the game tied.

Two wins and a tie made the Hawks the second seed heading into their quarter-final match-up with the Pickering Panthers. The Hawks came to play in this game and walked away with a 7-2 win. Gavin Armstrong and Jakob Harnest paced the offence with 2 goals each. Other goals came from Hussey, Reid and Gregory. Picking up assists were Marsh, Boates, Hussey, Armstrong and Aiden Haker. Groeneveld was strong once again in net and got the win.

The Hawks weekend came to an end in the semi-final game as they lost 3-2 to the East Gwillimbury Eagles. The home side came out flying and finished the first period with a 1-0 lead. That changed quickly as the Eagles picked up the pace and took a 3-1 lead to the third period where the Hawks once again took control but were unable to complete the comeback after scoring to make it a one goal game. Haker and Connor Kokonas found the back of the net in this game with assists going to Wiersma, Gregory and Matt Hicks.

The Lakeshore League regular season gets underway this weekend when the Hawks travel to Pickering on Saturday before hosting the Whitby Wildcats on Sunday at 1:45pm.
