Justin Williams Cup Recap
Hawks Battle Hard but Come up Just Short at Justin Williams Cup AA Tournament
The Klemencic Homes Atom Hawks travelled to Cobourg this past weekend to participate in the Justin Williams Cup AA tournament. The boys played hard but came up short in what was a stiff test battling AA teams which are a step up from their regular competition.
On Friday night the Hawks drew a tough opening opponent in the Ottawa Valley Silver 7 team. After falling behind 3-0 they battled back to make it 3-2 at the end of the second period but ran out of gas and dropped a 6-2 decision. Scoring for the Hawks were Daniel McLeod and Michael Dolton with Jack Lowry picking up the lone assist.
On Saturday the Hawks would need two outstanding performances to have a chance to get back in the tournament and move on to the Championship game and that is exactly what the received.
In game two of the tournament the Hawks put together a complete effort and shutout the host Northumberland Nighthawks 2-0. Seamus Killen was rock solid in the net picking up the shut-out while the offence was provided by Lowry and Dolton. Picking up assists were McLeod and Geoffrey Boates.
Saturday evening the Hawks once again came to play and downed a much bigger Stouffville Clippers squad who did all they could to over power the boys from Quinte West. After taking a 3-1 lead to the third period the Hawks held on for the victory. Logan Vale was solid between the pipes picking up the win. Goals came from Dolton, Lowry and Jakob Gardner with assists from McLeod, Boates, Dolton, Shane Jerrett and Eamonn Deery.
The two wins on Saturday set up a rematch with the Ottawa Valley Silver 7 team in the Championship game. The Hawks would hold leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before eventually falling 3-2 to the strong group from the east. The hawks goals came from Gardner and Mac Slone while assists went to Slone and Ben Davy.
The coaching staff was incredibly pleased with the effort put forth by the team in what was a great challenge for the boys.
The Hawks are back in Lakeshore League regular season action this coming weekend with road games in Pickering on Saturday and Clarington on Sunday.
