Hawks Have Strong Showing in Richmond Hill
Hawks Start Strong but Come up Short At Richmond Hill Tournament
The Klemencic Homes Atom Hawks had a strong start to their season in Richmond Hill this past weekend but came up short losing a 2-1 heart breaker in the semi-final of the Stars Early Bird Tournament.
On Friday the Hawks kicked things off with two strong performances as they beat the Welland Tigers 8-1 in the opener and followed it up by hammering the host Richmond Hill Stars 7-2. In game one the Hawks spread the scoring around with Daniel McLeod picking up two goals and single makers going to Jack Lowry, Ryan Kirk, Eamonn Deery, Ben Davy, Shane Jerrett and Michael Dolton. Assists went to Jerrett(2), Kirk, Lowry, Geoffrey Boates, McLeod, Dolton, Deery, Davy and Mac Slone. Seamus Killen picked up the win in net. Jack Lowry lead the Hawks in game 2 scoring 4 goals and adding an assist. Other markers went to Justin Bolduc, Jakob Gardner and Keenan Wiles. Picking up assists were Kirk, Tyvian Koets, Slone and Davy. Logan Vale was in net for the victory.
On Saturday the Hawks continued to roll with two more dominant performances in beating the Newmarket Redmen 7-1 in the morning and then the Oakville Rangers 6-2 later in the day. Scoring for the Hawks against the Redmen were Deery(2), Jerrett(2) Lowry, Boates and Gardner with assists going to Dolton(2), Koets, Bolduc, Deery, Gardner, Davy and Boates. Killen was the winner between the pipes. Oakville proved to be a tough test for the Hawks but in the end Quinte West pulled away with three late goals for the 6-2 win. Lowry again lead the offence with 2 goals and an assist with the other goals scored by Dolton, Boates, Slone and Deery. Adding assists were Dolton, McLeod, Wiles and Gardner. Vale was strong in goal, picking up the win.
The Hawks headed to Saturday's semi-final on a roll and feeling very confident. Their opponent the East Gwillimbury Eagles however were up for the challenge. In what was a great game the teams were scoreless until midway though the second period when the Eagles got on the board with a powerplay goal. The Hawks continued their strong play and refused to give up finally getting the tying goal with two and a half minutes to go in the third period. Quinte West continued to pressure the Eagles until the final buzzer but this one went to a 3 on 3 overtime period. With the teams trading chances throughout the Eagles netted the game winner with a wrist shot from the slot with only 90 seconds to play. The Hawks lone goal came from Michael Dolton with Geoffrey Boates picking up the assist. Seamus Killen was solid in net making several key saves.
The Hawks look to continue their strong play as they open the Lakeshore League regular season this coming weekend with two home games. They host the Lindsay Muskies on Saturday and then are home to the Whitby Wildcats(White) on Sunday.
