The Image Landscaping U15A Quinte West Golden Hawks kicked off the 2nd Round of the Lakeshore playoffs at home, versus the Peterborough Pete’s on Thursday March 24, 2022.

The Hawks’ Captain Brock Davy fired up the squad with a massive hit against a Pete player in the 1st period. The Pete player thought, ‘I can get this puck out of our zone and down the ice, no problem!’ Davy responded with, ‘oh, no you don’t!’ Then kaboom, yard-sale time.

With no score heading into the 2nd period, the boys decided ‘time to get rid of some of that March Break rust, and let’s see what grandma is keeping on the top shelf!?’ Keegan Carr started the scoring halfway through the 2nd period with a little bit of top-cheese nastiness (assisted by Kenney). A minute later, Charlie Mooney put the Hawks up 2-0 with a bar-down slapper from the slot (unassisted). Colby Coe then flew down the wing, breaking past the Pete’s D with a beauty breakaway goal (assisted by Wease and Webb). Many in the crowd were thinking with speed like that, Andre De Grasse must have put on skates and stole Coe’s jersey? Or if it was in fact Colby Coe? A couple minutes later, Mooney thought, ‘I think I’ll go behind the net, and shoot this off of the goalie, and in’. Then voila, he put his plan into action (unassisted).

In the 3rd period, the Hawks put the game out of reach, when Avery Wease snipped home one from the slot (assisted by Baird)

Dryden Riley was in net for the Hawks bringing home yet another big-shut out win.

Next up, the Golden Hawks faced off versus the Oshawa Generals, in Oshawa, on March 26th, 2022.

Jacob Brummel had the lone goal in the 1st period with a beauty of a shot (unassisted).

A few minutes into the 2nd period, Brock Davy put the Hawks up 2-0 (unassisted). Jack Andrews got on the scoreboard with an awesome shot (unassisted). Oshawa netted a goal on a powerplay putting the game 2-1 for the Hawks. Late in the 2nd period, Avery Wease put the Hawks up 4-1 with a slapper (assisted by Andrews).

In the 3rd period, Avery Wease got on the scoreboard once again with his second goal of the night (assisted by Andrews). The game finished 5-1 for the Golden Hawks.

Carson Down was solid once again between the pipes.

For the final game of the 2nd round of playoffs, the U15A Golden Hawks faced off against Whitby Blue Wildcats at home, on 27 March 2022.

The Hawks came out and showed their physical dominance, led by Charlie Mooney laying out a massive hit in the 1st period. Feeling the momentum on their side Avery Wease opened up the scoring with a slapper (assisted by Andrews and Baird). On the same shift Wease netted his second, up high top-shelf, where grandma keeps the Branflakes (assisted by Andrews). Shortly after that, Mooney got in on the hitting action once again. Mooney’s back-check on a Wildcat player resulted in the Wildcat’s stick flying high up in the air. The stick went so far it was rumoured that it stuck into the giant scoreboard hanging high from the arena rafters. The Hawks led 2-0 at the 1st intermission.

In the 2nd period, Brock Davy put the Hawks up 3-0 with a short-handed goal (assisted by Coe). Davy weaved Wildcat players in and out, like a page out of the old school arcade game ‘Frogger’.

There was no scoring in the 3rd period. The Golden Hawks took home the big win, with a final score of 3-0.

Dryden Riley was in the net for the Hawks, getting yet another big shut-out win!

Throughout this round of the playoffs, the players showed support for the ongoing crises in the Ukraine by taping their sticks yellow and blue, for the Ukrainian Flag. Of particular importance to the players was to show support to not only Ukrainians abroad but also to our Head Coach, Mike Belej. Mike is also of Ukrainian decent. Belej was quite surprised and touched by the team taping their sticks. Belej said, “it was an unbelievable gesture from the boys. I was taken back and lost for words. They must have done their research on my family. I’ve since had aunts and uncles reach out and express what a great group of young men they are. My dad was especially touched by it. These boys are a special group of young men, the way that they get along, and play for one another is rare at this age group. They are striving for that one common goal and I am honoured that I can be their leader. Kids are a reflection of their upbringing and also a reflection of the fantastic parent group that we have. This type of gesture is so thoughtful and appreciated, and can’t be matched by any physical gift. Next up, it’s time to bring home a championship this weekend.”

The Hawks are heading to the OMHA Championships, held in Whitby from April 1-3, 2022. On the first day of the Championship (April 1st) the Hawks will faceoff against the Milton WinterHawks at 11:15am, and Essex Southpark Ravens at 4:15pm, at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre.
