Minor Bantams kick off their season with a win

Pit Minor Bantams opened their regular season with a 7 – 3 win over the Ajax
Knights.
After losing 2 games to Ajax in a tournament the previous weekend and going into this game short-staffed with only 11 skaters, the Hawks knew they were in tough and needed a big effort from all. The Hawks opened the score in the first minute off a point shot from Walker Forsythe (assist Aidan Molenhuis). The score stayed this way despite some Hawk penalty trouble until late in the frame when Ajax tied it up with 46 seconds left in the first period. Ajax went ahead in the second but the Hawks regained the lead on a couple of power play goals from Kirk Stevenson (assists Caroline Dolton and Cole Hazlewood) and Molenhuis (assist Stevenson). Another goal from Molenhuis (assist Dolton) put the Minor Bantams ahead 4 – 2 going into the third. Quick goals from Joshua Mathew off a nice back door feed from James Phillips and a breakaway goal from Molenhuis (assist Ben Bridger) put the Hawks up 6 – 2 early in the third. Fatigue started to become a factor as Ajax pressured for most of the period but only managed 1 more. Matthew Jones (unassisted) added an empty net goal to seal the 7 – 3 win. Cody Harron backstopped the Hawks for the win. Coming up this week the Minor Bantams play their second regular season game Sunday Sept 22nd at 5:15 pm in the Duncan McDonald arena against the Peterborough Petes.
