This past weekend, the Quinte West Image Landscape Peewee Hawks participated in the Justin Williams AA tournament.  It was an action packed weekend with some exciting games and solid competition.  The Friday opener was against the host team Northumberland Nighthawks.  It was a back and forth matchup throughout with the Hawks owning the first period.  Quinte West would strike first with Avery Wease(Jack Andrews) scoring the lone goal in the period.  The same line would get another early in the second with Andrews banking in a Wease rebound to make the score 2-0.  The Hawks would fall asleep for the next little while and Northumberland stormed back with three quick goals of their own.  Andrews(Wease) would connect one more time in the third to tie things up but the Nighthawks wouldn’t relent, scoring the game winner and downing Quinte West 4-3 to start off the tournament. Carson Down played a solid game making lot’s of key saves to keep his team in this one.

Game 2 would see the Hawks matchup against Ted Reeve early Saturday morning.  The Hawks came out swinging and controlled most of the play early. Tate Webb(Coe, Fanjoy) would get the boys started in the first and the Thunder would get one of their own to keep things even after 1.  The Hawks would own the second period with goals from Colby Coe(Webb, Webster) and Andrews(Davy) to push them to a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the third.  Coe(Fanjoy) would add another in the third and Ted Reeve would get one late to end the match at 4-2.  Dryden Riley was stellar between the pipes to help the Hawks chances of making it through to Sunday.

Game 3 was one of the most entertaining games of the season with lots of drama and penalty minutes. The Hawks would need to play gritty and tough if they wanted to beat Cumberland and secure a spot in the semi-finals.  The first period was relatively even with Cumberland striking first and Nathan Sills(Weasy) answering back to keep things at 1-1.  Cole Baird and Brody Pilatzke would both find the back of the net in the second, and Cumberland would answer back with one of their own.  The second period was riddled with penalties, questionable calls and ejections, but the Hawks maintained their composure and battled through to keep the advantage heading into the final frame.  They tightened things up in the third and put things out of reach for the opponents with goals from Weasy and two from Holden Webster(Carr, Sillsy).  Carson Down made key saves when needed and helped the Hawks ensure the 6-2 victory and a semifinal matchup against Peterborough on Sunday.

Peterborough was quick to put the Hawks on their heels early in the first period with 2 unanswered goals.  Quinte West would show some signs of life in the second as Andrews(Carr, Weasy) would manage to get on the scoresheet, but they just couldn’t seem to get the momentum needed to slow down their opponents as the Petes would score two more..  Andrews was able to notch another in the third which was matched by one more Peterborough goal to end things for the Hawks 5-2.  Dryden Riley played another solid game and credit goes to both goalies and the entire team for a solid tournament! The boys all showed heart and character and gave hope of good things to come this season! Way to go Hawks!
