Minor Atom Nomads are Ajax Break the Ice Champions
Submitted By Heidi Tawse on Monday, September 10, 2018
After some very impressive weekend hockey the Minor Atom Nomads walk away champions in their division at the Ajax Break the Ice tournament.  The team would have a 5-1-0 record in the tournament with a total of 27 goals for and 11 against.
Thursday night saw the team facing off against Whitby.  Cam Slone opened up the scoring and landed 2 in the net before they were a minute into the game.  Slone would end up with a hat trick and Joey Nieman would add one to the score board in the teams 4 to 2 victory.

Friday morning would be the one loss the team would suffer in the tournament falling short by one goal and ending in a 2 to 1 score in favour of the Oakville Rangers.  Malachi Hoornweg would score the lone goal with Brad Senior assisting.
Saturday morning was a 5 to 3 win for the Hawks against the Aurora Tigers. Nieman  would notch himself a hat trick, with Slone and Andrew Gilson scoring one each.  Assists from Slone, Malcolm Brooks and Sullivan Tait.  The afternoon would bring about the same fate with another win but this time against the Westhill Goldenhawks.  Quinte West would dominate the game and win with a 5 to 1 score.  Scoring for the Hawks were Slone with another hat trick, Hunter Bradbury and Gilson.  Helpers from Nieman (2), Hayden Parent, Hoornweg, and Rhys Lawrence.
In the semi-final game on Sunday the team would take on the number 1 team of the division.  Hawks would walk away victorious as they handed down a beating to the Clarington Toros with a 6 to 1 score.  Slone, Hoornweg, Nieman (2), Brooks and Logan Fonger would all find the back of the net.  Assists from Doug Robinson, Kale Tawse, Fonger, Lawrence, Gilson (2), Tait and Neiman.  This victory lead the team to advance in the finals Sunday afternoon where the team would once again faceoff against Whitby.  The Hawks would walk away with their first ever tournament win after winning 6 to 2.  Slone would dominate the scoreboard with 4 goals.  Others goals were from Tawse and Brooks.  Nieman with 2 assists.
Owen Curran and Mason Taylor were stellar in net making several keys saves in all the games of the tournament.  They kept strong, steady and focussed between the pipes to lead the team to become the Minor Atom A Break the Ice Champions.
